In Kinds of Kindness, her latest collaboration with Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone leads a star-studded ensemble cast including such revered actors as Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, and Hunter Schafer. Kinds of Kindness is an anthology movie comprised of three short films. But unlike most anthology movies, the actors in Kinds of Kindness all play different roles in each of the film’s segments. All the main cast members, including Stone, play three different characters in the movie.

Dubbed a triptych fable, Kinds of Kindness kicks off with the segment “The Death of R.M.F.,” about a man’s attempts to break free of his powerful boss. The second segment, “R.M.F. is Flying,” revolves around a man who’s paranoid that his recently returned wife, who had been reported missing, is an impostor. The third and final segment, “R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich,” sees a cultist seeking out someone with the power to resurrect the dead. Lanthimos has recruited a typically impressive cast to bring these bizarre stories to life.

Emma Stone As Rita / Liz / Emily

Emma Stone was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1988. She first broke out with supporting roles in comedies, like Jules in Superbad and Wichita in Zombieland. She got her first starring role as Olive Penderghast in the teen romcom Easy A.

Stone has won two Academy Awards for Best Actress; she won the first for playing Mia Dolan in La La Land and the second for playing Bella Baxter in Poor Things. She also played Skeeter Phelan in The Help, Hannah Weaver in Crazy, Stupid, Love, Sam Thomson in Birdman, and Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes. Stone has also appeared in big-budget blockbusters, playing Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man movies, Eep in The Croods franchise, and the title character in Cruella.

In Kinds of Kindness’ first segment, “The Death of R.M.F.,” Stone plays Rita. In the second segment, “R.M.F. is Flying,” she plays Liz. In the third and final segment, “R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich,” she plays Emily. Stone previously worked with Lanthimos when she played Abigail Masham in The Favourite and Bella Baxter in Poor Things.

Jesse Plemons As Robert / Daniel / Andrew

Jesse Plemons was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1988. Plemons got his breakthrough with the role of Landry Clarke in Friday Night Lights. He gained further recognition with the role of Todd Alquist in the fifth and final season of Breaking Bad.

Plemons has played other iconic TV roles, like Ed Blumquist in Fargo season 2 and Robert Daly in Black Mirror season 4, episode 1, “USS Callister.” On the big screen, Plemons has played Joe Murphy in Bridge of Spies, Gary Kingsbury in Game Night, and Roy Mitchell in Judas and the Black Messiah. He collaborated with Martin Scorsese to play Chuckie O’Brien in The Irishman and Thomas Bruce White, Sr. in Killers of the Flower Moon.

In the first segment of Kinds of Kindness, Plemons plays Robert. In the second segment, he plays Daniel. In the third, he plays Andrew.

Willem Dafoe As Raymond / George / Omi

Willem Dafoe was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1955. He first broke out with the roles of Raven Shaddock in Streets of Fire and Rick Masters in To Live and Die in L.A. He became a bona fide star with his Oscar-nominated turn as Sgt. Elias in Platoon.

Dafoe has played roles ranging from a conflicted Jesus Christ in The Last Temptation of Christ to the supervillain Norman Osborn in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Dafoe later reprised his role as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Dafoe also received Oscar nods for playing Max Schreck in Shadow of the Vampire, Bobby Hicks in The Florida Project, and Vincent van Gogh in the biopic At Eternity’s Gate.

Dafoe plays Raymond in the first segment of Kinds of Kindness. He plays George in the second segment and Omi in the third one. Dafoe previously worked with Lanthimos when he played Dr. Godwin Baxter in the Poor Things cast.

Margaret Qualley As Vivian / Martha / Ruth / Rebecca

Margaret Qualley was born in Kalispell, Montana, in 1994. She’s the daughter of Groundhog Day star Andie MacDowell. Qualley first broke big with the role of Jill Garvey in HBO’s dystopian drama series The Leftovers.

Qualley gained further recognition with the roles of Amelia Kuttner in The Nice Guys, Mia Sutton in the movie adaptation of Death Note, and Manson follower puss*cat in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She starred as Jamie Dobbs in Ethan Coen’s crime comedy Drive-Away Dolls. Qualley was praised for her starring TV roles as Ann Reinking in Fosse/Verdon and Alex Russell in Maid.

Qualley plays Vivian in the first segment of Kinds of Kindness and Martha in the second. In the third and final segment, she has dual roles as twins Ruth and Rebecca. Qualley previously worked with Lanthimos when she played Felicity in Poor Things.

Hong Chau As Sarah / Sharon / Aka

Hong Chau was born in Thailand in 1979. She first broke out with the role of Ngoc Lan Tran opposite Matt Damon in Downsizing. The film received mixed reviews, but Chau’s performance was widely praised.

Chau received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her turn as Liz, Charlie’s nurse and enabler, in The Whale. She also played Elsa in The Menu and Polly in Asteroid City. On television, Chau has played Cook Pu in How I Met Your Mother, Linh in Treme, and Lady Trieu in HBO’s Watchmen.

In the first segment of Kinds of Kindness, Chau plays Sarah. In the second segment, she plays Sharon. In the third and final segment, she plays Aka.

Joe Alwyn as collectibles appraiser man / Jerry / Joseph: Joe Alwyn plays a collectibles appraiser man in the segment “The Death of R.M.F.,” Jerry in the segment “R.M.F. is Flying,” and Joseph in the segment “R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich.” Alwyn made his feature film debut with the title role in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. He also played George in Catherine Called Birdy and Henry Wallace in Boy Erased, and previously worked with Lanthimos when he played Samuel Masham in The Favourite.

Mamoudou Athie as Will / Neil / the morgue nurse: Mamoudou Athie plays Will in “The Death of R.M.F.,” Neil in “R.M.F. is Flying,” and the morgue nurse in “R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich.” Athie is best known for playing Dan Turner in the Netflix horror series Archive 81 and for voicing Wade Ripple in Pixar’s Elemental.

Hunter Schafer as Anna: Hunter Schafer appears as Anna in the segment “R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich.” Schafer is best known for her main role as Jules Vaughn in HBO’s Euphoria. She also played Gretchen in Cuckoo and Tigris Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

Yorgos Stefanakos as R.M.F.: The central role of R.M.F. is played by Yorgos Stefanakos. Stefanakos is an old friend of Lanthimos’; his only previous acting role was Georges in Poor Things.
