Valentine’s Day Felt Conversation Heart Craft Learning Benefits

I love how pretty these felt hearts look when finished. The best part? Kids of all ages can make them! From preschool to elementary school, these sweet hearts can be personalized with standard sayings or a new idea they brainstorm. Either will yield cute and festive results.

Preschoolers can practice fine motor skills by using a cotton swab to dip into the glitter glue and “paint” over letters, traced out for them by an older sibling or adult. They can also trace the letters with a finger (before the glue!), creating additional motor sensory letter familiarity as they get ready to write.

Elementary school-age children can work on spelling and writing using this conversation hearts craft. They can practice tracing and cutting using our printable heart pattern, available at the bottom of this post.

Challenge them to center the sayings, glue without glops, and come up with even more creative words that convey the same meanings. The sky’s the limit with this Valentine’s Day craft for kids!

How to Make Felt Conversation Hearts:

Print out the heart craft template (available by filling out the form at the end of this post). Cut out the heart patterns to trace on the felt.

Please note: The template includes a couple of different sizes. The medium size was used for the hearts in these photos.

Trace the heart onto the felt. I recommend using an air-soluble disappearing ink for tracing, especially on the white felt.

Washable markers also work for tracing. Just be sure to make sure the trace lines are on the back side of the felt. Cut out the felt hearts.

Allow ample time to dry before hanging, making a banner, or including inside a card.

Fun Ways to Use These Felt Conversation Hearts

When all of the conversation hearts are dry, hang them on the wall or place them on your desk or table to turn these into cute Valentine’s Day decorations that show how you feel about each other and others.

Another option is to create a lovely homemade banner or garland. Just add a length of twine to the back of the hearts with scotch tape or use a needle to thread the twine through each heart and hang when finished. Sewing through each heart is a great fine motor-promoting skill for older children.

These felt hearts also make great homemade gifts. Let the kids give them to friends and family as a fun and easy DIY Valentine that’s something different and unexpected.

These hearts are lightweight and can easily be added to a Valentine’s Day card as a sweet surprise for your friends and family to receive in the mail. Can your kids add up the full amount of the postage stamps, or estimate how many you’ll need? Sneaking in math has never been more loving than for Valentine’s Day!

Not quite ready to give them away yet? Make identical pairs to create a fun matching game using colors or words. Older kids can use the sayings as prompts to write sentences or a creative story about this special holiday. All ages can work on sorting them into alphabetical order.
