What Does a Massage Bar Do?
What are the benefits of a massage bar? Our skin dries further with temperatures dropping down, wind, and other environmental influences. And dryness can lead to inflamed and cracked skin.
A good quality body butter is essential for healthy skin. And here comes the best part…you can make your own non-greasy massage bar recipe at home.
A massage bar resembles a solid lotion bar and resembles a soap bar. The homemade massage ba is made with only moisturizing ingredients like coconut oil, cocoa butter, or shea butter.
To make a massage bar recipe, gently melt the above ingredients and pour them into molds. Once they have come back to room temperature, they will be firm and ready to use.
What are the Benefits of a Homemade Massage Bar?
The main benefit of a homemade massage bar is to moisturize and hydrates the skin. The DIY lotion bar also helps smooth, soften, restore, and protect the skin.
Applying the massage bar helps to:
- nourish and moisturize the skin
- easy and quick to make (non-fancy tools – melt, stir and pour)
- smells great
- has flexible ingredients (so you can pretty much use what you have on hand)
- improve skin health
Another benefit of making homemade body butter is that you can use natural and chemical-free ingredients, which gives you peace of mind that what is going on in your skin is full of goodness.
What Ingredients Do I Need to Make Massage Lotion Bar?
Knowing the ingredients used to formulate homemade skincare products from scratch is essential as learning how they work. Creating natural massage bars at home is easy, and I bet you already have all of the ingredients stocked in your beauty pantry. You’ll need the following:
Shea butter
Shea butter is an excellent ingredient if you suffer from dry skin. It contains vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and fatty acids that soothe, moisturize, and soften the skin. Shea butter is my favorite butter since it can soften and create a barrier on the skin to hold in hydration for longer.
If you don’t have shea butter, you can switch it to another butter, like mango butter or cocoa butter, to make a cocoa butter massage bar. This massage lotion bar recipe does work well and has a great consistency, so use shea butter if you can.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is excellent for oily skin, acne, or dry skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties making it a perfect treatment for eczema and psoriasis. Jojoba oil is balanced, softening, and soothing.
Note you can always replace jojoba oil with any carrier oil, such as almond oil, argan oil, or apricot kernel. To reduce the oiliness, you can use drier-feeling oils like fractionated coconut oil or macadamia nut oil. Experiment until you find your perfect blend.
Beeswax
Beeswax is an essential ingredient in firming up a massage bar. Beeswax is excellent for your skin health as it is a softener and a natural exfoliant.
Beeswax can calm, hydrate and soothe skin and can help with several skin issues. It can help repair damaged/wounded skin, in skin cell regeneration, soothe irritated skin and reduce pollutants from entering the skin by creating a thin, long-lasting barrier.
If you want a massage bar without beeswax, for example, to make it vegan, you can use candelilla wax or jojoba wax.
You can leave out this ingredient and add more butter instead. However, if you live in a warmer climate, you may find that your massage bar needs to stay solid with wax.
Silicone mold
Lastly, it would help if you had a mold for pouring the scrub bars. You can decide if you want to make big bars that you can use several times. Use a soap mold for the massage bars, as I did in this tutorial. Or you may need all-natural favors for your bridal shower or thoughtful little holiday gifts. Then, use an ice cube tray or a silicone mold with small cavities.
What essential oils can I use for this DIY massage bar recipe?
It’s entirely up to you to prepare this recipe with essential oils or skip them. If you’re looking for a nicely scented soap, try these oils: rose geranium, vanilla, lavender, or jasmine. Perfume oils are another great way to fragrance the bars, allowing even more options.
This crunchy orange massage bar recipe uses sweet orange essential and vanilla extract.
For those of you who also want to tackle specific skin conditions, use the following essential oils:
Dry skin: geranium, neroli, rose otto
Oily, acne-prone skin: helichrysum, lemongrass, ylang-ylang
Delicate, sensitive skin: German chamomile, lavender, basil
Inflamed, irritated skin: lavender, tea tree, Roman chamomile
Damaged skin: frankincense, juniper, carrot seed
Eczema: lavender, cedarwood, peppermint
Gift the Crunchy Orange Massage Bars
Since the bars are made with shea butter, I wrapped them in clingfilm (plastic/Saran wrap), tissue paper, and gift wrap. I added a pretty ribbon and attached a silk flower.
Since Valentine’s/Galentine’s Day is right around the corner, you can use romantic gift tags. Our Mother’s Day gift tags or wintery holiday tags might also be great options depending on the occasion or season.
How to use the DIY massage bars
You can use this homemade massage bar after a shower. First, warm the massage bar between your hands for a few seconds. Then, gently rub the massage bar over your body. During the massage, the bar will soften from body heat and may become slippery, so make slow, long strokes or circular motions. Massage your skin using circular motions and gentle pressure.
Shelf life and storage
Store the scrub bar in a dry and dark place when not in use. You can keep the massage bars for several months.
