We are grateful and humbled to receive the 2024 Community Impact Award. It's an honor to be at the Small Business Impact Awards hosted by Little Rock Regional Chamber and presented by BOND.AI! Thank you for believing in our mission and helping us change lives one scholarship at a time! We couldn't have achieved this without the generosity of our donors, the passion of our volunteers, and the resilience of the single parents who inspire us every day. Congratulations to Community Impact Awards finalists RECYCLE BIKES FOR KIDS INC and ICM Independent Case Management. You're both doing incredible work in the Central Arkansas Community, and we're proud to be nominated alongside you!

This week one of my team members shared the recent story of an individual facing a circ*mstance that absolutely should not be happening, but is. An older person was shopping at the grocery store. In the checkout lane they went to pay using their ebt/SNAP (food stamps). They didn’t realize the emergency SNAP allocations has ended and their resource had been reduced to only $23 dollars. They could not afford what they needed to eat to survive. They broke down crying, right there, in the checkout lane. This should not be happening. Our Federal government is not taking care of our most vulnerable community members. It is unacceptable and irresponsible to make policy and budget decisions that reduce resources that force people into hunger. At this current moment the State of New York has flat funded the charitable food system, like food pantries, at a time where we are experiencing the highest service levels of our 44 year history, and food inflation is at 7.7% compared to last year at this time. Staples for food pantries, like canned fruits and vegetables, are up more than 10%. Here in New York’s Capital Region, our coalition of food pantries is already seeing service levels 20% higher than last year, which was our highest year ever. Please help. We need you. Our vulnerable community members need to turn to food pantries right now, they have no other option. Please help us keep our pantry shelves stocked with food. Your donations to The Food Pantries for the Capital District matter! And if you are in need, or know someone in need, please direct them to our New York State Food Connect Map on our website or call 518-458-1167 M-F to find food assistance. Thank you. #endhungernow #workingtogether

"Black-led organizations consistently receive less funding than white-led organizations. The result: more than half of Black-founded non-profits have an annual budget below $250,000, and very few Black-founded orgs have an annual budget above $5 million. This means that Black-led organizations more often fail to reach scale or potential at a greater rate because of systemic barriers, leaving key innovations and leadership untapped."After reading this in the article below, I asked Google's Bard, "How many Black-led non-profits have a budget over 5 million?"Their answer: "According to the most recent data from the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are approximately 20,000 Black-led non-profits in the United States. Of these, approximately 1,000 have budgets of over $5 million. This represents a small percentage of the total number of Black-led non-profits, but it is a significant number that is making a real impact on the lives of Black people and communities."In a follow-up question, I found that approximately 100,000 White-led non-profits have budgets over $5 million. Based on Bard's previous response, this suggests that although there are about 4.5 times more White people in the US than Black people, there are 100 times as many White-led non-profits with a budget over $5 million than Black-led non-profits with a similar budget. To say initiatives like this are needed is an understatement and honestly not far enough.
