Dr. Shermeen Yousif ‘17, assistant professor at Florida Atlantic University and Texas A&M Department of Architecture Ph.D. graduate, recently received the Citation Award for Theoretical & Research, Professional from the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects. Working alongside professor John Sandell from Florida Atlantic University, their research titled “Airflow Simulation for Informing Environmental Design: Apartment Housing in Tropical Climates” explores the requirements for comfortable living in buildings in tropical climates, and examines cross-ventilation with the goal of optimizing airflow inside buildings to increase comfort. The research involves the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics for airflow analysis, allowing for a shift in the design process to achieve higher building efficiency early on.#architecture #environmentaldesign

We have developed a new clay-based modular tile with articulated thermal performances for the cooling of buildings. Through material, form and thermal experiments, developing effective manual-industry-oriented extrusion processes, geometric articulation and colour characterisation, the tile increases the natural ventilation flow through the tile, while heat absorption and transfer is designed through the developed surface properties. The research is realised within the Cluster for Material Studies, through expertise in ceramic design, architectural design, engineering and computational design and analysis. The material-form-thermal research will the presented and published at the forthcoming ACADIA conference in Denver, US. The project, including a series of investigation prototypes, will also be displayed at the annual research exhibition at The Royal Danish Academy opening in 2 weeks, where it is among the 25 projects selected for the public exhibition. Ranging from general light studies to investagions into point, line, and plane, the gestural modeling process has been nothing but constructive to my overall design experience. These models are not only a focused, yet liberating outlet of expression, but more importantly, they allow for exploration into material interaction and potential craft techniques.Below are additional gesture models from my first year at UL Lafayette School of Architecture and Design:

"Underneath the impression of kaleidoscopic difference produced by the rapid circulation of design images is a shared mechanism, an agreement about how architectural objects emerge from the procedures of design. This mechanism, which we call inscription, manages to both offer fundamentally intelligible form to architecture’s audiences and advance the field toward novel outcomes."Really glad to see three projects by Common Accounts be part of Harvard University Graduate School of Design publication "Inscriptions," edited by Michael K. Hays and Andrew Holder. https://lnkd.in/dvSESWDk

This month, twenty five years ago, I started an MPhil on architecture and time - a topic that has pre-occupied me ever since, prompting and informing my writing, teaching and design work.In 1998 there seemed little interest in architectural temporality. By 2023 discussion of time and temporality in architecture has become much more commonplace, as environmental action engages with re-use, circular economies, eco systems and life cycles. The thesis is now available to download - it remains a historical document, reflecting the time in which it was written. The text is reproduced in a largely unedited form. The layout and illustrations have been adapted and updated, from an analogue to digital format.https://lnkd.in/erar26RFThe thesis considers the relationship between architecture and time. It establishes a basis for understanding the uses of time in architectural composition. The nature of time is considered through a review of literature from a variety of disciplines and sources, including architectural texts and works. Temporal architectural techniques relation to succession and duration are identified and used to inform a series of design studies, deploying these techniques according to different temporal structures.Supervised by Dean Hawkes at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff UniversityAndrew Carr, ‘The Field of Time: The Uses of Time in Architectural Composition’ (Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University: MPhil thesis,1999) #architecture #time #temporality #designresearch #theory

How can digital manufacturing techniques shape the physical form in architecture? Fabio Gramazio will be presenting his work at the Norwegian National Conference on Timber Architecture on the 4th of April in Oslo! Fabio Gramazio is a Swiss architect, and Professor of Architecture and Digital Fabrication at ETH Zürich. He is the co-founder of the architectural research group Gramazio Kohler Research which examines the changes in architectural design that result from digital manufacturing techniques. In their work they propose a new paradigm in architecture where the digital and the material interweave to provide novel and creative design approaches for sustainable architecture.Gramazio &Kohlerhave been a leadingfiguresin the fields of computational design and digital fabrication in architecture.Theirresearch and practice have contributed significantly to advancing the use of computational and robotic technologies in the building industry. They havealso lectured andexhibited theirwork worldwide and have received numerous awards fortheircontributions to the field.
